IN ENGLISH
Theater Tent is a theatre event happening in the heart of Helsinki City, on the Central Railway Station Square, in a big tent, in May 16-24.
In the core of the nine-days-long festival there is a tragedy contest. Three tragedy plays, played by three different theatre groups. Each night there is a jury which comments what is seen on the stage: What is a tragedy today, in Helsinki, in Finland, in the world? The audience's discussion matters the most: in the end of each night there is a voting: where is the biggest tragedy.
In the spirit of the Dionysos festival in the ancient Greek, the Tent is pitched by Myllyteatteri, a Helsinki based ensemble theatre.
In the Tent Myllyteatteri performs a première of Lot's Wife, a play written and directed by Miira Sippola. The tragedy takes its inspiration from the biblical myth of the woman changing into a salt statue, offering a rigorous theatre experince for today's audience. The form of the play is based on the tragedyclassic Medeia, however it's talking about modern issues like: what is the real challenge in which child puts a society.
The other two tragedies seen in the Theatre Tent are:
Heracles, adapted and directed by an interesting and experienced Finnish director, Atro Kahiluoto, and produced by Helsinki Student Theatre and The Center Of Performing Arts Of Helsinki. The director acclaims Heracles to be a tragedy where the story of every character is tragical. The main character Herakles is the brother to all human people.
Bacchae 2, another Euripide's classic, is changed into movement and physical theatre by a group of young theatre artists, Und Er Libet, directed by Anna-Mari Karvonen. The performance by this interesting group experiments the intervals of ecstatic and resting intentions of tragedy.
The dates for the tragedy contest are:
May 16 (premier of the three plays), 17., 18., 21., 22., 23. and 24. All nights start at 6 p.m. and they last for appr. 3,5 h.

The artistic leader of the festival is Miira Sippola, director and writer, and founder of Myllyteatteri.
MYLLYTEATTERI is a professional theatre collective established in 2003. It proudly performs substancially, physically and visually profound drama theatre, which moves performers' bodies and audiences' emotions. It performs in Helsinki and willingly elsewhere in Finland and abroad.
The TheatreTent festival is a big effort from the theatre company. It arises from the strong belief on the theatre: theatre is a mirror for a society, it is here to take us to the roots. The TheatreTent event will be held every second year starting from 2008.
